2009-Nov-23 - Moving on with your life as a florist

Selecting Flowers
Buying flowers can be costly but many people these days frequently have no other means of supply. If you need a large quantity, try to visit your local flower market. These are generally open early in the morning and apart from offering fresh flowers at competitive prices, they can also be very entertaining.
Before selecting any material, look at the foliage and at the base of the stems. Discolouration can indicate age. Flowers should look as fresh and healthy as possible with no evidence of wilting. Smell will tell you if the material has spent some length of time in water. The base of the stems should not be slimy at all.
Material selected from florist shops will sometimes have been kept in cool, air-tight conditions and this will help to preserve them. Flowers and foliage offered by street traders will have been subject to the effects of the weather conditions.
Flowers such as irises, daffodils, gladioli and tulips should be bought when they are still in bud as they will soon open in a warm room. Look for roses at your florists Bedminster Down that have nicely shaped plump buds with good fresh foliage right up the stem. Chrysanthemums and other single daisy-type flowers should have a hard, green centre with a ring of pollen showing yellow at the base of the petals. Poppies open very quickly in water, so if possible buy them with only a trace of colour showing.

Starting a flower garden?
Study the problems, such as an ugly shed to be hidden, or a cold prevailing wind; draw in the features you want to emphasize, such as a fine tree or a natural slope, and remember practical considerations. A flower delivery Southgate could be a thing of the past once your lovely garden is established. Ask all your friends for advice: everyone loves to give advice, though you may not want to take it all. Often you will find that something will strike one person and something else another, and you will be given quite a lot of useful ideas. For example, we had decided to make a path between the house and a wall, and some sensible friend said ?Make it wide enough for the barrow.? I have never ceased to be grateful for the enormous amount of walking that advice saved me.

Valentine?s Day accessories
Wholesalers offer florists a wide range of accessories to add a personal touch to Valentine designs. Cellophane wrap is used throughout the year, but for Valentine?s Day you can make an arrangement even more special by using cellophane wrap with hearts and motifs on.
There is also a wide selection of picks and motifs, ranging from plastic cupids and hearts to dainty pottery, glass figures and delicate lace accessories. This includes plastic and pottery containers at prices to suit all pockets. Order these to arrive the same time as when you have your flowers delivered Surfers so you don't forget.
It is vital to be well-prepared for any peak selling period. Arrangements of fabric flowers can be organized well in advance and stored ready for the great day. A window display will require no maintenance if made with fabric flowers

Best loved flowers - Calamintha nepetoides (beautiful mint)
Characteristics: Unlike its cousins in the mint family, this attractive plant will not become invasive in the garden. It has pretty, thymelike, lavender-colored flowers Merchant City that bloom from summer well into autumn. The flowers grow in clusters along the entire stem. Plant it next to a pathway or on a terrace, so its lovely minty fragrance can be close by. The strong, erect stems make it great for air?drying.
Cultural Information: Like most members of the mint family, calamintha prefers full sun and proper drainage. Although marginally hardy, it has survived many a winter in my garden.
Harvesting/Drying: Pick the flow?ers when they are just beginning to open. Dry them by hanging them in small bunches in a warm, dark spot. The beauty of this tiny treasure is as much the long-lasting minty fragrance as it is the lovely, delicate flowers.

A Line Arrangement
A sense of rhythm is essential to all types of arrangement. A curved line has a rhythm, and takes the eye through the design. Here, the repetition of the gerbera flowers leads the eye through the design, and this rhythm and movement is reinforced by loops of bear grass. The whole design is given a visual weight and strength with the use of the Gaultheria shallon foliage at the base of the arrangement.
A line arrangement is the basis of many other designs, the line or focal area forming the nucleus around which traditional and freestyle designs are formed.
Suitable flowers
A line arrangement demands bold single flowers, such as gerberas, carnations, roses or chrysanthemum blooms. These are then balanced by large bold leaves, and the effect is completed with fine material, such as twigs, reeds, or bear grass.
This type of design is ideal for a buffet table, where the flowers Levenshulme are held above the food, and it can look attractive on a reception desk. Line arrangements also work ideally when paired on either side of an altar.

Go for something different

Flowers such as zinnia, tall phlox, peony, foxglove, sunflowers and others will be fresher than those that have been shipped long distances to a retail florist. You may find flowers that you love, but never realized were available as a cut flower. Always do your homework first, that is the golden rule here. If the flowers arrive on your wedding day and are not what was expected, then its too late to do anything about it.
Finding a reputable local florist to fulfill your flower delivery West Hollywood can be easier than you think. Check the local telephone directory and do some internet searches. They can give you names of florists in your area. Local farmers markets are also a great place to locate a local flower grower.

Telephone Books and Newspaper for Pressing
Telephone books are good for drying. They're cheap, plen?tiful, and have absorbent pages. This means you probably won't even need to use paper towels. If you bring the phone book right out into the garden, you can place your flowers directly into it (which lessens the chances of delicate petals being blown apart). When you open the telephone book to check your flowers, remember to start from the back of the book. The pressure will hold the other flowers flat.
For larger plants, use several sheets of newspaper. The fo?liage of many plants, such as ferns and astilbe, dry beautifully using this method and become more durable if you choose to send flowers Lafayette to another place. Follow the directions from a florist for layering each page. Cover with more sheets of newspaper. Allow about 10 pages between each filled page. Continue to layer leaves and paper, and finish by putting a weight on top.

Humidity helps flowers
An increase in the relative humidity around cut materials (flowers and foliage) is beneficial to most flowers, and to some it is very important. If the water loss through petals and foliage exceeds the rate at which water is taken up through the stem, then the cut material will wilt. Many cut materials are wrapped in cellophane sleeves in order to reduce this transpiration. Regularly spraying materials with water will also help to reduce the water loss, particularly if the atmosphere is warm and dry, or if there is a constant draught of air, from a doorway, perhaps, or from air conditioning.
Mimosa and tropical flowers will benefit from regular misting, as will cut foliages, such as Codiaem (Joseph?s coat), Nephrolepis (sword fern), and ? though its name may suggest otherwise ? leatherleaf, which is a type of shield fern.
High humidity is also advantageous to flowers Wills Point that have a much greater petal surface than stem surface, such as hydrangeas, roses, and many other summer flowers. Transpiration can be further diminished by removing some of the foliage, ensuring that water will reach the flower head rather than superfluous leaves.

Transporting and Looking after your Flowers

Many Willowbrook florists now deliver bouquets already arranged in a strong bag of water which can be kept for a while as they are - this kind of arrangement should be left undisturbed until you get it home. If the bouquet you receive hasn't been supplied like this then keep in mind these simple instructions...
The hours until you leave for home can cause your flowers to wilt and drop their petals, and shorten their vase life considerably. So firstly, find a sink, put in the plug, and stand up your bouquet in water until you leave for home. If this isn't possible, a bucket or washing up bowl will do. Whatever your method, your flowers need a drink of water, and fast. Remember to wrap something wet around the bottom of your flowers if the journey home is going to be a long one - a towel is good for this. Then place the wrapped end in a plastic bag so you don't spoil your clothes.

2009-Nov-11 - A final goodbye from the local florist

A pretty flower - Rudbeckia (black-eyed Susan)
Characteristics: Black-eyed Susan is a showy, daisy like native American perennial often found in natural meadows and along roadsides. It provides wonderful garden color all summer long. Black-eyed Susans make long lasting cut flowers. Their range of petal colors includes yellow, orange, red and bronze. When the petals fall off, they leave a dark, attractive cone-shaped center. This dark core is excellent for use in dried arrangements. Rudbeckia hirta 'Gloriosa Daisy' has profuse displays of large blooms up to 5 inches across on 3-foot stems.
Cultural Information: Plant black-eyed Susan 2 feet apart in average, well-drained soil. Divide the clumps in spring or autumn every four years. Dividing will ensure a more robust production of blooms. These tolerant plants will grow in poor soil and can withstand rough handling if Winthrop flower delivery is being used for shipment.
Harvesting/Drying: You can harvest black-eyed Susan at any time during its development. Just decide what size center you want to dry. Remove the petals and hang up the centers to dry. If you prefer, simply allow the flowers to mature on the stems and harvest later. The individual petals can be pressed and then reattached to the core with glue before mounting on a board.

Bud opening

Buds are stimulated to open by different things. For many plants, heat will stimulate bud opening; so keeping the plant cool is important if you wish to delay bud opening. This is very important, and cannot be overlooked. When ordering flowers from a Melbourne CBD florist, remember the following tips and your flowers will last longer than ever before so you can enjoy the warmth and beauty of nature in your home.

Special solutions can be used to help regulate bud opening, extend the life of the flower and discourage disease attacking and rotting the stems. This is particularly important on some types of flowers when they are picked early. Carnations, among other things, are often treated this way. Solutions can be used to do the following:

  • Increase the number of flowers on stems harvested prematurely.
  • In cold storage, delay immature buds from opening for a short period until market demand increases
  • To hold buds from opening until after a weekend when businesses are closed and selling isn't happening for a couple of days.

Solutions often contain sugars to compensate (partly) for inadequate food reserves available to the buds, and a sterilant such as sodium hypochlorite, to kill disease organisms in the water. The strength of chemicals used can be critical. Some flowers are damaged by concentrations which are ideal for others. (eg. Roses and chrysanthemums are susceptible to excessively high levels of sugar).

These solutions need appropriate temperatures to be absorbed by the plant. At very low temperatures they will not be absorbed, so cool stored plants may be sometimes put into a warmer situation for a period before cool storage to allow absorption.
So the next time you're ordering flowers Upper Hutt, bear in mind this long complicated process of getting those blooms to your recipient.

Instant Oasis
Some flowers are easy to combine informally in a bouquet by simply placing them in a container and arranging them loosely, one by one, until you get the effect you want. In other cases, you may desire a more formal arrangement and need to use devices you can purchase from a Kitts Green flower shop: Instant Oasis, a block of light, porous material, which is reusable; a pinholder (needlepoint holder); and floral clay or tape. Oasis is invaluable in arrangements because it holds the stems wherever you want them. Never let one flower depend on another to hold it upright. It won't work for long. Cut the Oasis slightly smaller than the container and push it onto a needlepoint holder that you've covered with a small piece of nylon panty hose. (The nylon makes it easier to cleanly remove the Oasis.) If the holder doesn't stay in place, fasten it to the bottom of the container with floral tape or clay. Soak the Oasis in lukewarm water for a minute or two before you set any flowers in it. The container you choose should be clean so the flowers will stay fresh, and the flowers should relate well to it. Neutral-colored containers show off blooms to best advantage, but use your imagination to create unusual combinations. Hide plain jars and cans in bas?kets, an antique kettle, or other receptacle, for example.

Ethylene
This is an odourless gas that is also a natural plant hormone. It is generated by all plant parts, some of the gas being released into the surrounding air, in particular when a plant is stressed or physically damaged. The more ethylene in the air, the earlier cut flowers will mature, giving less pleasure and value to the customer. A common source of ethylene is ripening fruit.
Some flowers are more susceptible than others, carnations perhaps showing the most dramatic effects. Stored at room temperature in a room with ripe tomatoes or apples, untreated carnations can wither overnight. Other symptoms are yellowing of leaves, leaf drop, and the failure of buds to develop. Flowers Clayton that have been given a pre-treatment are less sensitive to ethylene; more buds open, and their vase life is extended by between 50 and 75 per cent.

Basing your blooms

Basing is the art of padding a shape with flower heads usually chrysanthemums and then making a spray of more delicate flowers arranged across the centre . Ribbon edging gives a lovely finishing touch. The centre spray can be highlighted in the same colour as the ribbon edging to create a flower arrangement that you can be proud of. Contact your local florist and arrange for the coloured ribbon to accompany your flower delivery Miracle Mile North .

Wrapping flower arrangements
Arrangements benefit from being gift wrapped, as this protects them from extremes of temperature and helps to preserve an atmosphere of high humidity, so that flowers Greenfield arrive at their destination at the peak of perfection. In addition, the perceived value of a gift-wrapped arrangement is greater than the actual outlay for sundries, and this is good, both for the florist and for the purchaser.
There are many ways of gift wrapping, or ?gifting?, flower designs, and the simple methods discussed here uses a good quality cellophane, with ample thickness to enable it to stand by itself. Cut a generous amount of cellophane, and bring the ends up to join at the top of the arrangement. Scrunch them together, and fasten with sticky tape. The open sides of the cellophane are brought together and joined with sticky tape.
Underneath the arrangement, the cellophane can he pleated around the container where necessary, and again fixed with sticky tape, to make handling easier.
The design is completed with a harmonizing ribbon bow.

Buttonholes and Boutonnieres
These normally take the form of one large flower, such as a carnation or rose, with perhaps a small piece of foliage. The most popular foliage is Asparagus setaceus, but there is nothing wrong in using the natural foliage, such as rose or carnation leaves, or even including hedera in the flower delivery Garston.
These are usually a bunch of small and dainty flowers grouped together ? white heather, convalleria or stephanotis, for example.
Every wedding is individual, and as florists, we should surely encourage variety and small personal touches; this makes our jobs more interesting and each occasion unique and memorable.

Topiary
Small topiaries or standards can be used as table decora?tions. If you have a live topiary such as an ivy, rosemary or santolina growing in a pot, just add individual dried flowers or small bouquets to give it a dec?orative look for parties or holi?days. In winter, add dried berries, small seed heads, pods, or pinecones to create a seasonal topiary.
You can buy mock topiary forms from a Splott flower shop or create your own. To make a topiary form, you will need a base container such as a clay pot, vase or basket fitted with a piece of floral foam. Remem?ber to tape the foam securely to the container. You will also need a stem, which can be a stick, branch or short wooden dowel. Secure the stem into the base container with floral tape. Finally, you will need to attach your chosen topiary shape onto the stem. Cover the floral foam ball with a base or filler flower such as moss or sea lavender. The base material can be attached with floral pins or glue. Once the form is covered completely, add interesting and colorful dried flowers such as rosebuds, bachelor buttons, zinnias or pods and berries. For a final touch, have thin strands of silk or velvet ribbon stream down, or tie on tiny ribbon bows. Hold the ribbons in place with floral pins or hair?pins.

A pretty flower - Sedum (stonecrop, sedum)
Characteristics: Sedum is a succulent plant that thrives in full sun. It boasts clusters of showy flowers Elm Park from late summer into fall. Sedum purpureum 'Autumn Joy' makes a fine addition to any garden because it brings year-round interest to the border. If allowed to dry naturally on the plant, the flower stalks will turn an attractive rust-red color. And in winter, they will support a layer of snow.
Cultural Information: Sedums are not fussy about their soil, but they insist on well-drained conditions. They are tolerant of drought. Sow the seed in late summer or mid-spring at 65? F or take stem cuttings any time of year.
Harvesting/Drying: Pick the flower heads of sedum just before they have fully opened. If you harvest early in the flower's development, you can retain some of the pinkish-red color. Sedum flowers picked in late summer and early autumn will have a beige color. To dry sedum, remove all foliage and tie in small bunches to air-dry. For even better results try the silica or microwave methods.

2009-Nov-4 - Light at the end of the tunnel for your florist

Lies, damn lies, and research
Here are some of the things researchers claim fresh flowers can influence:
Happiness – fresh flowers are known to give an immediate burst of happiness to anyone lucky enough to receive them. The signs are a big genuine smile, relaxed nature, and if you’re lucky some increased levels of affection. The findings were consistent across all age groups.
Positive effect on mood – fresh flowers have been proven to give a long term positive effect on the receiver by reducing negative feelings such as depression, anxiety, agitation and sadness. For the cynical amongst you, I’m sure you’ll agree that the mood of the florist arranging to have the flowers delivered Canoelands will perhaps be the most positive of all!

In Praise of Hyacinths
Hyacinths, among the most lovely and sweetest-smelling flowers of spring, have inspired poems and legends for centuries. Greek mythology records two stories of their origin: in one version the hyacinth sprang up where the blood of Ajax, a hero of the Trojan War, soaked the ground; in another version it grew from the blood of the boy Hyacinthus, accidentally killed by a discus thrown by Apollo. Wild hyacinths abounded in ancient Greece, but it was in the Middle East that the flowers were first widely cultivated. The esteem in which they were held there is evidenced by these lines attributed to the 13th Century Persian poet, Saadi:
If of thy mortal goods thou art bereft,
And from thy slender store two loaves alone to thee are left,
Sell one, and with the dole
Buy hyacinths to feed thy soul.
Hyacinths are indeed a wonderful flower, and having these flowers delivered Richmond usually results in a big smile on someone?s face.

Where Does Your Garden Grow?
Before you choose the specific site for your garden, first step back and consider the characteristics of the whole area in which you live. North America has a wide range of climates, from areas with year-round ice and snow to tropical paradises. Foresters, farmers, and gardeners rely on the United States Department of Agriculture?s hardiness zone map for choosing the plants that will grow well in their climate. Updated periodically, the map classifies each region according to its average annual minimum temperature. Some maps also show average dates of first and last frosts. Zone 1 is near-tundra, and Zones 2 and 3 have low winter temperatures and short growing seasons. Much of the continental United States falls into Zones 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8, where a wide range of plants grow well. Since Zones 9 and 10 have little or no frost, people there can raise many tropical and semitropical plants. Any florist Long Beach can provide you with a hardiness zone map.

Famous Hybrid Perpetuals
The blossoms of hybrid perpetuals are large (up to 7 inches across) ?and most are fully doubled, with as many as 100 petals. A limited color range runs from white to deep maroon but includes no yellow. As compensation, Frau Karl Druschki, a lushly growing hybrid perpetual, is considered to be one of the finest of the white roses, and it is still widely grown.
The plants are rather tall, most varieties averaging 4 to 5 feet and some reaching twice that height. The leaves and thorns display the same wide range of shapes, colors and sizes as the hybrid teas. Best known of all the hybrid perpetuals is the famous American Beauty Rose. In the good old days, when a young man could still afford a dozen red roses, it was a dozen American Beauties that he held behind his back when he had the flowers delivered Hampstead and rang the doorbell of his best girl.

The versatility of flowers
Funerals and weddings have something in common ? flowers! In both cases, flowers are used to celebrate life; the end of a life and the beginning of a couple's life together. Flowers send many different messages for all sorts of different occasions.
An arrangement of daisies can be sent to cheer someone up and let them know that you're thinking of them. A dozen long-stemmed red roses says, ?I love you? quite clearly. Flowers can be sent with get-well wishes, happy birthday wishes, congratulations on your new job or graduation, apologies, and of course, to new mothers to celebrate the birth of their new little one.
But let's face it; people can get through an illness, a birthday, a graduation, and more without a single blossom. That's not the case with a wedding. Start talking about a wedding and images of flowers come to mind. A wedding simply wouldn't be a wedding without a flower delivery Hotwells of a bridal bouquet and the many other arrangements that are part of the big day. From reception centerpieces, to corsages, to flower girl baskets to the wedding bouquets themselves, flowers are an essential element in a wedding.

Daylily Hybrids
Choose two superior plants in the same genus (two daylilies, for example) for the parents. Just before the buds open, cover a flower from each plant with a small paper bag. After the flowers pop open, collect some of the pollen from one of the flowers. (Pollen is the yellow or brown dust on the stamens, the male parts of the flower.) Transfer this pollen to the sticky top of the pistil, the female part of the other flower. The pistil is usually a long green tube with an enlarged cap at the top end. Use a brush to collect and move the pollen, or pinch off one of the stamens and brush the pollen directly onto the pistil. Tag the flower so you can identify the seed later, and record the names of both parents in a notebook. This step is important, because if you come up with something special and send flowers Kingstanding to someone, others will want to know who the ancestors were.

Choosing flowers for a man

Like women, just about any kind of flowers ? roses, tulips, lilies, sunflowers, orchids etc ? are bound to touch even an alpha male. But the kinds that really appeal to them are flowers that are ?sturdy? and ?full of personality? like the angular birds of paradise, anthuriums or orchids.

Skip the fluffy big bouquets and head straight for the exotic, tropical or contemporary arrangements in linear or angular compositions. If this is your first time giving your man flowers, you can play it safe with a flower/plant dish that he can place on his desk at work or on his coffee table at home. If you send flowers Ty Glas to his place of work then you are just asking for trouble , take it from me ladies.

My dearest flower series - Reticulata Iris Bulbs
Among the more than 200 kinds of wild irises that grow in various parts of the world, those that are truly bulb plants fall into three groups: Reticulata, Xiphium and Juno irises. Reticulata irises are low growing (usually only 4 to 8 inches tall) and each bulb bears one flower 1 to 3 inches across in very early spring, just about when snowdrops, crocuses and winter aconites appear; the leaves are short or just beginning to grow when the flowers open, but eventually become 12 to 18 inches long before fading away in early summer. Four Reticulata irises are especially lovely in rock gardens and along paths, and also popular choices when having flowers delivered Picton as a gift. The violet-scented I. bakeriana has three deep violet erect petals and three purple-spotted hanging outer petals; it grows 4 inches tall. I. danfordiae and I. histrioides major bloom when their leaves first pierce the soil; I. danfordiae has lemon-yellow flowers and grows 2 to 3 inches tall, and I. histrioides major has blue flowers and grows 4 inches tall. I. reticulata has fragrant, deep violet-purple flowers and grows 6 inches tall. I. reticulata has also been crossed with other species to produce the fine Reticulata hybrids, whose colors run from deep purple to light blue.

Wedding bouquets
Wedding bouquets can vary enormously in size, ranging from the small hand tied posy that might be carried by the mature bride at a registry office to the magnificent bouquet carried by Princess Diana at her wedding at St Paul?s cathedral. In both designs, the relationship between the individual flowers is important; they must be graded to form visual links, one to another.
In the hand tied posy, it would be visually inappropriate to use spray carnations, freesias and spray roses, and then add fatsia leaves. The leaves would dominate the whole design, making it seem unbalanced and out of scale. Imagine the disappointment if your flower delivery Spurger doesn't appear to be carefully thought out.
Princess Diana?s bouquet used flowers of similar size, such as gardenias, convallaria, stephanotis, roses, and hedera leaves, but because these were used in large quantities, a bouquet some 1.35m (54in) in length was created. This was in proportion to the height of the bride, the volume of her dress, and the magnificence of the cathedral.

2009-Nov-1 - Life's twists and turns can be helped with flowers

A Handtied Posy
Handtied bunches are a delightful way of giving flowers. The stems are clear of leaves and the flowers are arranged. All the recipient has to do is to re-cut the stem ends and place the flowers in a vase of water. Handtied bunches have always been part of the European florist?s repertoire; nearly every assistant in a florist?s shop will arrange flowers in the hand as they are bought, the stems having already been stripped of their leaves before they were placed on display.
Starting with one good strong stem, the other materials are added as the bunch is turned in the hand. This distributes the flowers evenly around the main stem, and forms a good all-round shape. The top of the design may be flat or domed, depending on the personal preference of the Redland florist making the design. There is no correct method -- just different styles, chosen as appropriate.

One of my favourite flowers - Ageratum houstonia?num (floss flower)
Characteristics: Originally from Mexico and Central America, ageratums thrive in hot summer weather as long as they are well watered. The range of blues, from soft, clear blues and powder blues to rich, dark blues, make ageratums very popular annuals.
There are dwarf, compact and tall, upright varieties. The compact varieties form mounds of fuzzy, tufted blossoms that bloom from early summer to fall. Two excellent dwarf varie?ties are ?Blue Danube? and ?Pink Powder-Puff?, which both make very showy edging plants. However, 'Blue Horizon', a taller variety, is better for use in drying and is conveniently available for Hillingdon flower delivery in many areas.
Cultural Information: Agera?tums thrive in well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. They can be propagated from cuttings, but most are grown from seed. The seed requires light to germinate, so simply press the seed lightly into a moist planting formula. The young plants are very tender and initial growth is slow. After transplanting into the garden, pinch back to encourage full?ness. On parts of the West Coast where winters are mild, seed can be planted in late summer for fall bloom. Space dwarf varieties 6 inches apart, tall varieties 12 inches.

How Much Water?
How much good ample water can do is indicated by an old story about a florist Wattle Park who traveled the countryside selling pink pills guaranteed, he said, to stimulate rosebushes into furious bloom. His prescription was one pill to a pail of water, administered once a week. It worked, too. Not that the pills did any good; the regular watering helped the roses so much that his customers never suspected they had been taken.
There is a simple way to tell if your roses need water. Stick your forefinger into the soil as far as you can. If it is dry down there, the roots below probably need moisture. Water thoroughly; the lowest roots will be properly moistened at about the time that the absorption of water slows down noticeably on the surface, usually after about two hours. Such a soaking should serve for a week or 10 days under average conditions. After a week, make the finger test again, and repeat it daily until the next watering is indicated. Depending on the weather and the type of soil, you may water more often or less often, but do not vary the amount of water that you use in each application. A single deep watering does much more good than the same volume of water doled out in two or three su?perficial applications that only dampen the top of the soil.

Pink rose motherly love

It is interesting to note that the most traditional connotation of pink roses is of a mother's love for her child. A story has it that when Mary first saw her son Jesus carrying the cross to which he would later be crucified, she shed a tear.

That tear fell on the barren ground and from that very tear, grew the very first and most perfect pink rose.

Perhaps, this is why in the Talmud, it is written that only pink roses are allowed to bloom in Jerusalem and as a result, pink roses have come to be a symbol of paradise as well. Whatever you believe about pink roses and their meaning, you have to admit that they are a very beautiful flower. I recently spent some time with a local Florist and was absolutely amazed at the number of pink roses that were delivered in my area. It seems that people are quite a romantic bunch at heart, and will gladly send flowers West End at every opportunity!

Consider Backgrounds
Flower arrangements are always seen against a background. It may be the sitting room wallpaper or the grey stone of a church wall. When choosing wallpaper, we always look to see if it will go with the carpet, for we know by experience that it might look perfect in the shop, but dreadful when we get home. In the same way, the eye registers the difference, or contrast, between an arrangement and its background, so the former must be brighter than the latter, to enable it to show up.
The background to an arrangement is already in situ, so we need to create a design of flowers Whalley Range that will be seen against it. This is quite easy in large buildings, such as churches, where the walls are of grey stone or white paint. It becomes difficult if the walls are brightly coloured or painted. In this case, try to find an alternative site for the arrangement. If this is not possible, use a colour that will contrast with the background.

Malmaison
Malmaison was a show place of many kinds of exotic plants and animals from all over the world (the menagerie included kangaroos, a chamois, an ostrich, and a trained orangutan that wore a coat and skirt, curtsied, and ate at a table), but its roses were Josephine's first interest. More than 200 varieties grew in its gardens. Watching over them was a corps of horticulturists and Koreatown florists, inc?luding a consultant from London, nurseryman John Kennedy, who made regular visits to Malmaison despite the wars between Engl?and and France. He had a special pass to get safely through the lines of the opposing forces.
The remarkable results these experts achieved can still be seen, at least in part, for although Josephine's rose gardens fell into ruins after her death, they have now been largely restored, and Mal?maison has become a public museum. Today an empress' resources are no longer needed to grow unusually beautiful roses or even to create wholly new varieties of plants. The techniques developed at Malmaison have been improved, simplified and added to so that home gardeners can grow spectacular "show" roses, propagate plants of their own and even breed totally new varieties.

Dried Flowers

Flowers are usually dried using desiccants. Embedding the flowers in a granular, desiccating material is considered the best all around method to dry flowers. The flowers are covered with the desiccant ensuring that their shape is well maintained. Desiccant can be a little tricky to get hold of, but the local reseller of flowers Red Bluff should be able to help you locate a supplier. If not, then there is always your friend google!

A Separate Cutting Garden
Not all flowers for drying are everlasting; many annuals, perennials and shrubs can be easily preserved. Take a walk in your garden and I am sure you will find a bounty of materi?als just waiting to be harvested for drying. Many popular garden plants, such as peonies, roses and hydrangeas, are candidates for drying, and also make wonderful gifts when you send flowers Bridge City-Orangefield to someone. You might even already have some growing in your garden.
If you decide to grow flowers specifically for drying, you will need to choose the plants and the type of garden that will suit your needs best. Those people lucky enough to have lots of space may want to create a separate cutting garden of dried and everlasting flowers. In this kind of cutting garden, annual flowers are grown in tidy rows without regard to color, height or bloom time. Cutting gardens are simple, yet highly productive. If, however, you have limited space but would love to grow dried and everlasting flowers, try mixing them into your existing an?nual and perennial borders.

Roadside Treasures
In your search for new and different materi?als, don't forget to search your roadsides and fields. Nature provides a wealth of plant materi?als to be used in dried arrangements and bou?quets. You will be delighted with many of the roadside treasures. (When collecting in the wild, remember that you should never deplete the roadside flowers. Leave at least a dozen be?hind, and use care not to disturb the roots. This way you will ensure their future beauty.)
Every season holds its own special dried treats. After the flowers fade, many plants retain seedpods and seed heads that are unusual, in?teresting and beautiful in arrangements to be used for Greenwood Heights flower delivery, which has become very popular in recent years.
The art of flower drying has advanced rapidly over this century and there are new techniques to help retain the lasting beauty of flowers. I suggest you start with the simplest technique: air-drying. Once you have mastered air-drying, you may decide to try your hand at more in?volved drying techniques. Using these methods, you can produce a dried flower that looks as fresh as the day it was picked.

2009-Oct-18 - Searching for love and a good florist

Where to Plant Bulbs
The ease of concealing unkempt bulbs as they mature is one consideration in choosing sites for them. But to my mind it is more important to place the flowers Rivett where they can most readily be enjoyed. Spring bulbs will bloom while the temperatures still range in the 30?s and 40?s; at a time when I, for one, am not yet ready to stroll in the yard. So I put mine where I can see the flowers easily from the windows of the house. Plants bearing relatively large flowers (tulips and daffodils) may be planted some distance away and still be enjoyed. So may the little snowdrops, snowflakes, striped and Siberian squills, grape hyacinths and white crocuses, if they are planted in sufficiently large quantities and massed dramatically against a contrasting dark background such as a group of evergreens. But these little plants, as well as such colorful jewels as dwarf irises, spring meadow saffron and winter aconites, are equally appropriate in beds or borders near the front door where you and arriving guests can enjoy them at close range.

Methods for Drying Flowers
In earlier, more romantic days, a single flower was placed between the pages of a book or bible to preserve its beauty. Even scientists used heavy books to carry home new and unusual plant material for study. Drying methods have since become more advanced, and today we have a variety of ways to preserve flowers and retain much of their natural beauty. This is important, since Bay of Islands flower delivery has become so popular and flower preservation is in rising demand. The six basic methods of preserving flowers and foliage are air-drying, water-drying, drying in a microwave oven, using desiccants, preserving in glycerine, and pressing. Each method has its advantages and its disadvantages and some methods are better for some plants than for oth?ers. For example, foliage dries best if preserved in glycerine. Air-drying is the simplest method. And when the desiccation method is used, flowers retain their natural color and shape (in?deed, they're often mistaken for fresh flowers). Serious flower driers use all the basic methods, alone and in combination.

Extending the life of your blooms
Nowadays it is possible to buy a proprietary chemical substance which extends the life of some flowers. Use these materials according to the manufacturer?s instructions. You can always ask your florist to include some with your next flower delivery Coventry, but be sure to consult with them on the best product and how to use it.
Over the years some discoveries have been made which, although not based on scientific fact, are known to help extend the life of some plants. It is certainly no old wives? tale that aspirin helps to keep flowers fresh and that flowers are known to last well in metal containers. A copper coin in water slows down the breeding rate of bacteria and a few drops of weak disinfectant will help to keep the water the flowers are in smelling fresh.

Unusual flowers - Eryngium (sea holly)
Characteristics: Sea holly has showy, silvery gray foliage and steely blue flowers. Two popular species are Eryngium giganteum (a biennial with large flower heads) and E. alpinum (with a smaller, deeper blue flower head). Both are good candidates for air-drying. The flowers Victoria Park look like those of echinops, but they are smaller and less fragile.
Cultural Information: Propagate by sowing seed. Allow for a period of dormancy; the germination is slow. Once established, Eryngium is a sturdy heat and drought-tolerant plant. It is best grown in full sun and average soil with good drainage.
Harvesting/Drying: Harvest the fully developed flower heads before their blue color begins to fade. They are not as delicate as echinops and can be either hung to air-dry or dried in an upright position. The strong stems of Eryngium do not require wire after air-drying.

Digging up Bulbs
After your spring bulbs have finished flowering in the garden, leave them to build up energy for the next year's cycle; when the leaves have yellowed and withered, you can snip them off if you like. In the case of most spring bulbs, this is the last gardening chore of the year. However, to guarantee a good show for next year, certain bulbs should be dug up and replanted. The very large-flowered tulip bulbs produce their biggest flowers the first spring after planting, and then the bulbs multiply into more but smaller bulbs. As a result, smaller flowers Carmyle will appear in following years. The best way to guarantee large blossoms is to dig the bulbs up, sort them into various sizes and replant immediately, setting each size in separate groups. (Keep them out of direct sun while sorting, or they may dry out.) Eventually the small bulbs become larger, but if they are not dug up and replanted in enriched soil each year, they soon exhaust them?selves and the soil around them through overcrowding. The same technique is used for hyacinths. On the other hand, daffodils, cro?cuses, fritillarias and most of the other spring bulbs will multiply and become more beautiful each year without being dug up and re?planted. Only when they become so crowded that they produce fewer or smaller blossoms do they need to be lifted out and di?vided; the excess bulbs can be used to increase the size of the present bed or to start new beds elsewhere. When you replant, set the bigger bulbs where they will be conspicuous when they flower. The smaller ones can be planted in an out-of-the-way corner in the gar?den, a sort of nursery bed. When they have grown up they can be set in a place of honor to give you pleasure for years to come.

Imagine the disappointment if your flower delivery Central doesn't appear to be carefully thought out.

Lunaria annua (money plant, Pope's money, honesty)
Characteristics: The money plant is an old-fashioned garden plant grown for its showy seedpods. It is best grown in an informal setting or meadow. The small clusters of flowers are violet or white in color. A standard of Victorian European parlors, this lovely plant was not grown in America until the 1930s. It produces circular seedpods that dry into translucent silvery discs. These pods are extremely decorative and useful in dried arrangements.
Cultural Information: The money plant is easily grown from direct sown seed. In early summer, biennial plants need to be seeded where they will flower the following summer.
Harvesting/Drying: This plant needs very little drying time. Pick the silvery white seedpods when dry and papery. Remove the outer brownish discs (the outer seed cover) by gently rubbing. A lovely silvery disc will be uncovered. Air-dry in an upright or hanging position until stems are dry. If you choose to have these flowers delivered Creigiau, handle gently as they tend to become very brittle.

When words just aren't enough

Flowers can be the perfect gesture for a funeral, since they often convey your thoughts far better than words ever could. At a time of bereavement flowers can say more than words although some people may ask for donations to a good cause as opposed to a floral tribute. However, a funeral without flowers can be very stark and bleak. Flowers add colour and fragrance and help lift the spirits somewhat of what can be a very solemn occasion. Sending flowers Fiske Terrace can often bring a sense of warmth to the most solemn event.
